From Master Ren's notebook

The 7 remedies I use to keep my mind clear at 95

You have been asking me for the whole list. Here it is, in the order I take them. Six of them you can start tomorrow with what is already in your kitchen. The seventh is the one that matters most, and it is the one almost nobody keeps up.

So you know who is talking

My name is Ren. My grandmother kept a garden of forty-one herbs and a notebook she would not let anyone read. When she passed, the notebook came to me. I have spent seventy years adding to it.

I am 95. I still write my own letters, I still remember my great-grandchildren's names, and I still walk to the market on Tuesdays.

People keep asking me what I do. So here it is, written down properly, once. None of it is a secret.

Why your mind feels slower than it used to

It is not that you are losing your intelligence. I want to say that first, because I have met too many people who quietly believe it.

What changes is sleep. Your body makes less melatonin as the years go by โ€” that is the signal that tells you it is night. And it starts earlier than most people think. By your forties you are already making less of it than you did at twenty. Less signal, lighter sleep. You wake at three. You wake at five. And the next day everything runs half a step behind.

Melatonin is made in one small gland, deep between the two halves of the brain.

PINEAL GLAND
The pineal gland. Smaller than a pea, and the only place your body makes melatonin.

Here is the part almost nobody hears. Of all the soft tissue in the human body, that little gland collects the most minerals. Researchers have found calcium and fluoride packed into it at levels found nowhere else. It hardens with age, the way a kettle furs up.

So everything I do starts in the same place. Look after the sleep, and the mornings look after themselves.

1

First thing, before food

The warm turmeric cup

What you need

  • A cup of warm water, not boiling
  • A pinch of ground turmeric
  • A spoonful of raw apple cider vinegar
  • A very small pinch of black pepper

How I take it

Stir, wait five minutes, drink it slowly before anything else. The pepper is not for taste โ€” turmeric is poorly absorbed on its own, and pepper is what lets your body take it up.

Turmeric has been used for centuries to support the body's normal response to inflammation. I have started every morning this way since I was forty.

2

Breakfast, three or four days a week

The blueberry and walnut blend

What you need

  • A handful of blueberries
  • One walnut
  • Half an avocado
  • A teaspoon of pumpkin seeds
  • A glass of unsweetened almond milk

How I take it

Blend one minute. Drink it cold.

Your brain is close to sixty percent fat, and it cannot build itself from nothing. This gives it the fats, the antioxidants and the magnesium it needs for ordinary daily work.

A walnut looks like a small brain. My grandmother thought the plant was telling you something. I think it is a coincidence. We both ate them.

3

One spoon a day, any time

The pumpkin seed powder

What you need

  • Two tablespoons of pumpkin seeds
  • Half a tablespoon of turmeric
  • Half a tablespoon of ground cinnamon
  • A small pinch of black pepper

How I take it

Grind it together, keep it in a jar with a lid. One heaped spoon a day in porridge, yoghurt or warm milk.

Pumpkin seeds are one of the richest ordinary foods for magnesium and zinc, and the nervous system uses both constantly. The cinnamon is there for blood sugar, because a mind riding a sugar spike is not a steady mind.

4

For the afternoon slump

Moringa and lemon

What you need

  • A teaspoon of moringa leaf powder
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • A tall glass of water

How I take it

Around two or three, when the day starts to go grey. Not in the evening โ€” it will keep you up.

They call moringa the miracle tree where it grows. The lemon is not for flavour. Vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron in the leaf, and iron is how oxygen gets to your brain.

5

Twice a week

Beetroot, ginger, honey and lemon

What you need

  • One fresh beetroot
  • A teaspoon of raw honey
  • A slice of fresh ginger
  • The juice of one lemon
  • A cup of water

How I take it

Blend one minute, drink it fresh. It stains everything it touches, so mind your good tablecloth.

Beetroot is naturally high in nitrates, which the body uses to help blood vessels relax and open. Your brain is two percent of your weight and takes twenty percent of your blood. Circulation is not a small matter.

6

The easiest one here

Cocoa in your coffee

What you need

  • Your usual morning coffee
  • A teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder

How I take it

Stir the cocoa in while the coffee is hot. That is the whole thing.

Raw cocoa is full of flavanols, which have been studied for their effect on blood flow. You are already making the coffee. This one costs you a spoon.

7

The one that matters most

The jar

What you need

  • Lion's Mane mushroom
  • Moringa
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Spirulina
  • Enough raw apple cider vinegar to cover them

How I take it

Fill a glass jar with the four herbs and pour the vinegar over until they are covered. Seal it, keep it somewhere dark, and leave it two full weeks so the vinegar can draw the compounds out. Then one small spoon a day in water.

These four are the ones I would keep if I had to throw everything else away. Lion's Mane has been studied for its role in supporting healthy nerve tissue. Ginkgo has been used for centuries to support circulation to the brain. Moringa and spirulina bring the antioxidants that help protect cells from everyday oxidative stress.

The trouble with the seventh one

I have given that recipe away more times than any other on this page. I have almost never seen anyone still taking it three months later. For a long time that bothered me, so I sat down and worked out why.

The four herbs are not in your kitchen. I checked the prices before writing this. A good lion's mane powder is close to forty dollars on its own. Add ginkgo, spirulina and moringa and you are past eighty โ€” for four large bags you will use one spoonful from. The rest goes stale in the cupboard.

Then you wait. Two weeks in the dark before the jar does anything at all. People lose interest somewhere around day nine.

Then you have to drink it. Vinegar and mushroom is not a pleasant morning. Most people stop in the first week and never tell me.

And it is never the same twice. My jar and my grandmother's jar were different jars. Different leaf, different season, different strength. You are never quite sure what you are taking.

But the real problem is none of those. It is that a remedy taken for four days is not a remedy โ€” it is a gesture. Everything on this page only does anything once it becomes ordinary, like brushing your teeth. And nobody keeps up something that costs eighty dollars, takes two weeks to start, and tastes like that.

So I stopped handing out a recipe I knew people could not keep, and had it made properly instead.

The jar, already made

Pineal Guardian X

Pineal Guardian X, 2 fl oz dropper bottle

It is the seventh remedy, already made. All four herbs from my jar are in it, as a liquid you stir into whatever you drink in the morning. Nothing to buy, nothing to wait for, and the same strength in every bottle.

And since it was being made properly, I added the seven other things I would have put in the jar years ago if they were easy to find at home.

From my jarWhat it is there for
Lion's ManeSupports healthy nerve tissue and mental sharpness
Ginkgo BilobaSupports circulation to the brain
MoringaAntioxidant support
SpirulinaRich in tryptophan, the building block of melatonin
What I addedWhat it is there for
BoronHelps direct calcium where the body wants it
ChlorellaBinds heavy metals to support natural clearance
TamarindTraditionally used to support fluoride clearance
Bacopa MonnieriUsed in Ayurveda to support recall and calm focus
Pine Bark ExtractSupports blood flow, so the rest is absorbed
NeemAntioxidant support for cells under stress
Lemon Juice PowderSupports the body's own clearance pathways

The same remedy, both ways

Making the jar yourself

  • Over $80 for four bags of powder
  • Two weeks before the first spoonful
  • Strength changes batch to batch
  • Sharp vinegar and mushroom taste
  • Most people stop in week one

The bottle

  • From $29 a bottle, a month at a time
  • Ready the day it arrives
  • Same strength every bottle, lab tested
  • Two droppers in juice or coffee
  • A year to send it back if it does nothing

A month of it costs less than the lion's mane powder alone. That was the whole point.

How to take it: two full droppers, 2ml, once a day, in juice, water or your morning coffee. It is slightly sour, because there is real tamarind and lemon in it.

What to expect, honestly: most people notice their sleep before anything else, usually inside the first two weeks. The clearer mornings follow the better nights. It is not an overnight thing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

Questions people ask me

Should I still do the other six?

Please do. The bottle replaces the jar, not the kitchen. The turmeric cup and the pumpkin seed powder cost almost nothing and I would not skip either.

How long before I notice anything?

Sleep usually shifts first, inside the first couple of weeks. Everything else follows the sleep. Give it three months before you decide โ€” that is what the year-long guarantee is for.

I'm in my forties. Is this too early?

No. Melatonin starts declining long before people notice the fog. If anything, starting while the sleep is still mostly good is the easier way round.

I take other supplements and medication.

These are ordinary botanicals at ordinary amounts. But if you take prescription medicine, particularly for the thyroid or for thinning the blood, talk to your doctor first. And never stop anything your doctor has given you.

What if it does nothing for me?

Send it back. You have a full year and you get every penny, including the bottles you have already opened.
