New Year, Same Me: Using Holiday Momentum to Jumpstart Fitness Goals

It’s that time of year when we start thinking about New Year’s resolutions…You know how it goes.

You feel like you overindulged over the holidays, and now you’ve got some big ideas about how to rectify your cookie-eating ways come January 1st…oh wait maybe January 2nd (c’mon…who starts a diet the morning after New Year’s Eve?)

Okay..listen up, if this sounds like you, do not freak out.

I’m going to help guide you from holiday overload to New Year perfection in an easy transition, without the burnout!

Are you in? Reply to me with YES! And you’ll already be in the right vibe for 2025!

First of all, if you’re anything like most people, you probably dread New Year’s Resolutions. Why is that anyway?

Well, I think it’s got a lot do with how much we all inevitably fail to stick to them! Especially when it comes to weight loss and fitness habits.

So what if you did this instead? Reframe your resolution as goals and intentions?

I’m talking about behaviours that form a habit system that you can actually stick to. Sustainable, realistic goals come from habits that actually work for you.

You need a game-plan that is successful both short and long term.

When you have just this great big vague notion that you are going to ‘lose weight in 2025’ it’s super easy to get off track early on. Because you haven’t put any kind of plan in place for yourself and you lose motivation fast.

A habit makes motivation unnecessary. A habit powered by an intention will carry you through even when you feel totally unmotivated.

If you truly want change, I mean BIG CHANGE in 2025, you need a strategy that works!

And yeah, I’m not going to lie, it will take some real effort, lots of hard work, discipline, determination and daily action to create the change you desire.

What the New Year brings you is really all about what YOU bring to the New Year!

So what’ll it be? Another year of no change, or a year where you finally shift things and change your life to reflect how you actually want it to be?

The KEY to successful change in 2025 is about breaking down your larger goal into small, incremental action steps that lead you towards the results you desire.

Once you are really clear on your intention, your big weight loss goal for the year - take that and break down how you are going to achieve it within a specific time period.

For example, if you want to lose a certain amount of weight, say 40 pounds, reduce that goal into smaller, more manageable, realistic goals for you, by week or month.

So for example, rather than the overwhelming task of losing 40 pounds, focus your goal on losing 3 pounds a month. That is way more achievable than the big overall goal and helps you to not experience mental overwhelm.

You then create motivation and momentum each month as you head towards your large goal.

You can then make a plan for each month regarding how you are going to lose those 3 pounds.

That it could include:

  • Joining a gym.
  • Setting time aside in your calendar, 3-4 times a week to workout.
  • Treat that time like an appointment, it’s non-negotiable.
  • Taking a brisk 20 minute walk each morning and evening.
  • Swapping out one bad dietary habit for a healthy one.
  • Adding in 2 extra pieces of fruit a day.
  • Getting an accountability buddy to exercise with.
  • Tracking your results each week.

Once you have a clear idea of the things you can personally do to work towards your resolutions, you can then break the year down into smaller chunks of time.

Work ahead in weeks (say 2 weeks at a time or 12 weeks at a time) to create a timeframe that feels accessible to you. Then create challenges and set yourself deadlines within each time frame that serve your larger intentions.

If you want to mix up your exercise routine, plan it ahead of time.

Being prepared is one of the best ways to stick to a habit and make it part of your routine.

Remember to work on your self belief too. Self-belief is super important in terms of keeping you motivated and working towards your goals!

Most of all feel empowered, you can do anything you set your mind to!
